Craftsman and Sears Garage Door Opener Repair in Denver
Sears stopped selling garage door openers, and the service network that supported them went with it. That left a large number of Denver homeowners with a working Craftsman unit, no dealer to call, and a parts counter that no longer exists.

The part most homeowners do not know
Craftsman openers were never actually built by Sears. They were manufactured by Chamberlain, the same company behind LiftMaster, and sold under the Sears house brand. Under the cover, a Craftsman opener is close kin to a Chamberlain unit of the same era.
This is genuinely useful news if you own one. It means the gear kits, sprockets, sensors, capacitors, and in many cases the logic boards have Chamberlain equivalents that are still in production. When a big-box store tells you parts are discontinued, they are searching a Craftsman part number. We are searching the Chamberlain equivalent, and it usually exists.
Reading your Craftsman by its numbers
Craftsman openers carry a model number beginning with 139, printed on a label on the motor housing, usually visible from the floor if you have a flashlight. That prefix identifies the unit as Chamberlain-built and tells us the generation.
The learn button color on the back panel tells us the radio generation, which determines what remotes will work:
- Green or red indicates an older Security+ rolling code system, generally late 1990s through early 2000s
- Orange or purple indicates the mid-generation Security+ platform
- Yellow indicates Security+ 2.0, the current generation, found on the last Craftsman units sold

Common Craftsman failures we repair
Stripped drive gear. The motor runs, the door does not move. On a chain-drive Craftsman this is the single most frequent failure, and the nylon gear kit is an inexpensive repair rather than a reason to replace the unit.
Blinking light codes. Craftsman units communicate faults by blinking the courtesy light in counted sequences. One blink usually points to sensor wiring, two to a shorted sensor wire, four to sensor alignment. We read the code rather than guessing.
Sensor failure. Original Craftsman photo eyes are now decades old on many units. They fail from age, from moisture in a garage that sees Denver snowmelt off a car, and from corroded wire splices in the wall.
Chain slack. A chain that has stretched over twenty years slaps the rail and jerks the door. Adjustment is straightforward and restores quiet operation.
Capacitor failure. The motor hums but will not turn over, typically first appearing on a cold January morning.
The one Craftsman we tell you to replace
We are conservative about recommending replacement, with one firm exception.
Federal law required photo-eye safety sensors on garage door openers manufactured after January 1, 1993. If your Craftsman has no sensors mounted near the floor on either side of the door, it predates that requirement. There is no way to add compliant sensors to a unit that was not designed for them.
An opener with no photo eyes has only mechanical reverse, which relies on the door contacting an obstruction with enough force to trip it. In a house with children or pets, that is not an acceptable safety margin. If we find one of these, we will tell you plainly, and we will not repair it and leave it in service.
Short of that, the decision is ordinary economics. A gear kit on a fifteen-year-old Craftsman is money well spent. A failed logic board on a twenty-five-year-old unit usually is not, and replacement runs $499 to $1,200 installed. See opener replacement.
If you are replacing, you are not locked into anything
Because Craftsman units are Chamberlain-built, a modern LiftMaster or Chamberlain opener mounts to the existing rail bracket and header in most cases, which keeps installation straightforward. You are not obligated to stay within any brand family. We will fit the opener to the door and the garage, not to the label on the old one.
Homes with living space above the garage, which covers most attached garages in Lowry, Central Park, and Capitol Hill, are usually best served by a belt drive for noise reasons. Before you blame the opener
A Craftsman that strains, reverses partway, or trips its safety reverse is often reporting a door problem rather than a motor problem. The opener is rated to move a balanced door only. A broken torsion spring hands it the door’s full weight, which no residential opener is built to lift.

Can I still get parts for a Craftsman opener?
For most models, yes, through Chamberlain equivalents. The Craftsman part number may be discontinued while the identical Chamberlain part remains in production.

Is it worth repairing a twenty-year-old Craftsman?
It depends entirely on which part failed. Mechanical wear items are worth repairing. A failed board on a unit that age usually is not. We will give you the numbers both ways before you decide.
My Craftsman has no sensors. Can you add them?
No. Units built before 1993 cannot accept compliant photo eyes. That one warrants replacement on safety grounds.
