What fire door drop testing is

A rolling fire door spends its entire life looking like an ordinary door. It is held open by a fusible link or an release mechanism tied into the fire alarm system. In a fire, that link releases and the door closes under its own weight, sealing an opening and containing the fire to one compartment of the building.

The problem is that a door which operates perfectly every day may still fail to close when released. Accumulated grease, a worn governor, a painted-over release, a curtain that binds slightly in the guide: none of those stop normal operation, and all of them can stop the door from dropping.
