Denver is harder on exterior finishes than almost anywhere at sea level, and the door that photographs beautifully on install day is not automatically the one that still looks right after a decade of Front Range sun.

Altitude, UV, and what actually happens to a finish here
Denver sits a mile up with thin, dry air and roughly three hundred days of sun. UV intensity increases meaningfully with elevation, and the EPA’s UV index guidance notes elevation as a direct amplifier of exposure.
What that does to a garage door:
- Fade is directional. A south or west-facing door fades measurably faster than a north-facing one on the same street. On a two-door garage where one is shaded by a wing of the house, you can sometimes see the difference between them
- Darker colors show it more. Deep browns, blacks, and saturated reds shift more visibly than whites and almonds
- The freeze-thaw cycle compounds it. Denver swings through freezing and back in a single day repeatedly through winter, and that expansion and contraction works on any coating already weakened by UV
- Hail micro-pitting creates surface texture that holds dirt and dulls the finish even when there is no visible dent
The CHI finish range
CHI’s finish depth is its distinguishing feature among the major manufacturers, and the product range covers several approaches.
Standard steel colors in a factory-applied coating. Durable, widely available for section matching, and the safest choice if long-term matchability matters to you.
Woodtone finishes print a woodgrain appearance onto steel. These get the look of a wood door with steel durability and no refinishing schedule, which in this climate is a genuine argument. The tradeoff is that a printed finish is harder to match years later than a solid color, because the print pattern and base tone both have to line up.
Accents plank styles break the door into a plank pattern rather than traditional raised panels. These suit the modern infill going up around Denver’s core better than a raised panel does.
Full-view aluminum and glass. Same conversation we have with every glass door here. West-facing glass at this altitude turns the garage into a solar collector on summer afternoons, and it is worth deciding that with open eyes.

The section matching problem
This is the practical consequence of everything above, and it is the thing most homeowners learn at the worst possible moment.
When a car backs into a door or hail dents the top section, replacing one section is usually cheaper than replacing the door. Whether it looks right is a different question.
Three variables:
Is the color still produced? Manufacturers retire colors. A discontinued shade means matching to the nearest current option, which is rarely exact.
Has the existing door faded? On a ten-year-old south-facing door, a brand new section in the identical factory color will read as a different color, because the rest of the door has shifted. This is not a manufacturing defect and there is no way around it.
Is the profile still made? Panel embossing patterns change across model years.

Making a finish last
Nothing exotic, and it makes a real difference over a decade.
- Wash the door two or three times a year. Denver dust, road grit, and winter magnesium chloride sit on the finish and abrade it
- Rinse the bottom section after winter storms specifically. De-icer residue is corrosive and collects at the bottom
- Keep the bottom weather seal intact so moisture is not wicking up behind the seal
- Address chips promptly, since bare steel in this climate will rust from the edge outward

Construction, springs, and hardware
CHI builds across single, two, and three layer construction, same as Clopay and Amarr. Three layer with bonded polyurethane is the upgrade worth making on an attached garage, for rigidity as much as insulation.

Will a woodtone CHI door fade?
All exterior finishes change over time at this altitude. Printed woodgrain finishes hold up well, and the honest caveat is that they are harder to match exactly if you ever need one section replaced.
Can you match a section on my existing CHI door?
Often, and we verify color availability, profile, and how much the existing door has weathered before ordering. We would rather tell you it will look like a patch than surprise you with it.
Is a steel woodtone better than a real wood door in Colorado?
For most homeowners here, yes, on maintenance grounds. Real wood is beautiful and needs refinishing on a schedule that the dry air and UV make shorter than people expect.
Does a darker door make the garage hotter?
Marginally, and far less than direct sun through a full-view glass door. Insulation matters more than color for garage temperature.
